Mozart's famous clarinet concerto was actually written for basset clarinet, an extinct version of the instrument that featured an extension down to written low C. Modern clarinets only go down to low E. The accompanying audio fragment is from the middle of the 2nd movement where the low notes play a prominent part. With its slightly stuffy, somber bass tones, the basset clarinet lends an entirely different character to the piece.
