Jessica Kim

Hello, my name is Jessica Kim. I am currently a junior at UTSA majoring in Music. I was born and raised in Austin, TX. I started piano when I was 5 years old and violin when I was 8. I entered numerous competitions including All-Region, All-State, joined the Rudie Quartet and attended Austin Chamber Music Academy. I ended up quitting both instruments when I was 18 due to the competitive pressure and my parent's expectations of me. I also felt like I had to play instead of actually wanting to play. A couple years down the road, I started getting into the live music scene in Austin. I attended SXSW, ACL, and caught a lot of live shows in Austin. I saw a different scene of music, since I was raised up in a classical environment. My parents did not approve of punk rock, heavy metal, hip-hop, electronic music and other sub-genres of those sorts. I ended up buying a electric guitar, synthesizer, and started teaching myself Fruity Loops, Reason, Sound Forge and other music programs. I picked up the violin again and transferred into UTSA's music program. After I graduate, I plan to start my own experimental band and go on from there.
